SOMA Residence

Set in a converted SOMA loft, this renovation responds to an unusually personal client brief—equal parts living space, cultural vessel, and architectural provocation.

The design is grounded in a palette of textured restraint: charred Shou Sugi Ban cladding, powder-coated metalwork, stained walnut, and tailored leather elements form a moody, immersive envelope. Within this framework, functional zones are visually and spatially interwoven, their boundaries softened to support fluid movement and layered activities.

A two story living space offers a luminous counterpoint to the otherwise shadowed interiors. Daylight pours in, illuminating midcentury graphics from the client’s collection, evoking a kind of retro-futurist optimism. Throughout, Soviet, Cuban, and American propaganda share walls with idealized visions of the nuclear age, reinforcing a subtle narrative of power, control, and desire.

Discreet technical integrations support a lifestyle both domestic and unconventional. Subtle architectural cues enable the space to quietly transform in function, while remaining visually cohesive and materially rich.

This is a home that shifts in mood and meaning, inviting different readings by day and by night. It is equal parts austere and indulgent, intimate and performative.
